Artistic residence with dancer and choreographer Jesús Carmona, Joaquín de Luz, first dancer of the New York City Ballet and New York choreographer and director David Neumann. The residence will be held at the New York City Center, a center of reference for dance worldwide.
This will be the first residency flamenco project to be held at the New York City Center. This center plays a decisive role in the cultural life of the city since 1943 when it was founded by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia with the civic mission of making performing arts accessible to all.
This three extraordinary artists from different creative worlds will share the results of a five-day artistic exploration of stillness as a choreographic concept and expressive force in dance. Dancer and actor David Neumann, artistic director of Advanced Beginner Group and three-time winner of the Bessie Award; New York City Ballet principal dancer Joaquín de Luz, winner of the 2016 Spanish National Dance Award; and flamenco bailaor Jesús Carmona, former first dancer of Ballet Nacional de España, who presents his own show at the Flamenco Festival this year, join forces in this City Center residency project where cross-disciplinary investigation is at the heart of the process of generating ideas.
The artistic residence will have as a research theme "Exploring Stillness "as a choreographic concept. A conversation and performance among the three artists will take place on Fri, Mar 9, 2018.
Jesús Carmona is one of the most brilliant dancers of the current flamenco scene. Despite his youth, is endorsed by great prizes among which include the Trophy Desplante at the Festival of Cante de las Minas, La Union in 2012.
Joaquín de Luz, outstanding performer and principal dancer of the `New York City Ballet ', was an outstanding student of the maestro Víctor Ullate, with whom he studied his first ballet years and with whom he also took the first professional steps. After winning the Gold Medal at the international ballet competition `Nureyev' in Budapest, Joaquín de Luz took the international leap and since then he has to frame his work outside our country.
David Neumann is a choreographer, dancer and American actor. He is known for his magnetic energy and his charisma on stage. David was a tireless child who used his power and energy in dance from a very early age. He has worked with numerous companies and directors in opera, film and theater and received important awards such as two Bessie Awards in 1991 and 1998.
