The Flamenco Biennial Netherlands 2015 has paved the way for flamenco in Northern Europe. With a multidisciplinary programme that cuts across different fields of culture, from the outset it has striven to promote flamenco as a form of contemporary art aimed at a heterogeneous audience. Its main purpose is to innovate and shatter preconceptions and expectations both in the artistic field and among audiences.
The flamenco guitarist and composer Juan Manuel Cañizares is taking part in the festival with the support of AC/E through the mobility programme. Together with Christianne Stotijn and Ed Spanjaard, he is performing De Falla Flamenco, a tribute to the brilliant composer Falla, which will be premiered at this biennial.
AC/E is also supporting the presentation of two films in this year’s biennial: Paco de Lucía: La búsqueda, (Paco de Lucía: The Quest) by Curro Sánchez and Triana Pura y Pura, by Ricardo Pachón.
Lastly, José Manuel Velázquez Gatzelu and the photographer and filmmaker Félix Vázquez are taking part with “Colección de Retratos” (Collection of portraits), a compilation of artistic documentaries featuring different flamenco performers.
Cañizares has won important awards such as the National Guitar Prize (1982) and the National Music Prize (2008). He has been the first and only guest flamenco guitarist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he performed the Aranjuez Concerto conducted by Sir Simon Rattle at the Teatro Real in Madrid. He collaborated with Paco de Lucía for 19 years and has performed on stage and recorded with other great artists such as Enrique Morente and Camarón de la Isla. As a composer, Cañizares has composed music for the Ballet Nacional de España and several film soundtracks.
