Pereira poetry festival was established as a result of the cultural activity of the local university and, in particular, that of a team of students. Together they founded the magazine Luna de Locos, the main driving force behind the festival, at the end of the 1990s. The aim of the festival is to return poetry to the public space through various activities which are staged throughout Pereira and several nearby municipalities. The activities are geared to audiences of ordinary people, especially children and schools, where many of its many workshops, lectures, talks and galas are held.
As part of the festival, the poets taking part also run the programme La poesía vuelve al salón de clase, which features activities such as poetry reading, talks on literary creation, participation in roundtables on translation and literary tradition and various workshops. These activities are focused on school groups, workshop groups in libraries, and interviews with young creators. Each poet carries out 10 activities (2 daily) in Pereira and municipalities of Risaralda.
Thanks to the support of the AC/E Programme for the International Culture, the Spanish poets Juan Carlos Abril Palacios, Luis Antonio Villena, Pedro Olalla and María Ángeles Pérez López are taking part in this major Latin American poetry project together with other guests from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Honduras, France, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Lebanon and Colombia.
