Since its establishment, the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema has been held annually under the aegis of the Cuban film institute (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos, ICAIC). Its purpose is to give recognition to and disseminate films that contribute through their significance and artistic values to the enrichment and reaffirmation of the Latin American and Caribbean cultural identity.
This year’s festival is the 36th, and will take place from 4 to 14 December 2014. The grants awarded under AC/E’s PICE programme are enabling David Trueba and Daniel Sánchez Arévalo to take part.
The festival programme features a wide-ranging and representative selection of contemporary cinema from the rest of the world, including a showcase of Spanish films.
Every year the festival organises competitions in various sections: Fiction, Documentary and Animation, Opera Prima, Unproduced Scripts and Posters. It also holds conferences and seminars on various issues of cultural interest, especially related to films.
Thirty years on, the festival is not just one of the most important events in Cuban cultural life, with an average annual attendance of approximately half a million spectators, including all the provinces in the country, but also one of the widest-ranging and most representative Latin American film festivals on the world agenda of film festivals.
