Festibérico 2016

Festibérico 2016

The 10th edition of Festibérico, a Spanish and Portuguese film biennial held in the Netherlands, showcases the work of accomplished and new filmmakers. The oldest, Manoel de Oliveira, died last April at the age of 106. Visita ou memórias e confissões, the film he made in 1982 to be shown only after his death, can now be seen together with his first film (shot in 1931!). These screenings are intended as a tribute to the great Portuguese director. Of the young directors, Paula Ortiz is showing La novia; based on Federico García Lorca’s play Blood Wedding, it is a fascinating film version of the passions explored in the classic play. Other experienced directors are Javier Fesser, with his animated film Mortadelo y Filemón contra el Jimmy Cachondo;  Miguel Gomes, whose trilogy on the Thousand and One Nights is being shown, and Pablo Hernando (Berserker) and João Pedro Plácido (Volta à terra), who provide an overview of the latest Spanish and Portuguese films.

Special activities include the opening sessions with representatives of the Spanish and Portuguese embassies, interviews with various guests and a performance by the fusion flamenco guitarist Marcos Teira and bassist Rafael Morales on Sunday 24 April.
