Mostra Espanha is a cultural activities program organized by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport, which takes place in various locations in Portugal. Its main objective is to showcase the dynamism and creativity of Spain's cultural industries at the present time. As part of this year's Mostra Espanha program, the Cultural Center of Belém will exhibit the Guest Work "The Embrace" (acrylic on canvas, 151 x 201 cm) by Juan Genovés, belonging to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which will be on display between September 2024 and January 2025, with the collaboration of Acción Cultural Española.
Painted in 1976, "The Embrace" by Juan Genovés has served as an emblem of reconciliation, used by Amnesty International and as a tribute to the lawyers of Calle Atocha. In this work, Genovés employs expressive figuration to convey the emotion and force of the embrace. The human figures are recognizable, but they are simplified and stylized, giving them a universal and timeless character. The decision not to represent the faces of the embracing figures is intentional. By eliminating this individualizing characteristic, Genovés emphasizes the idea of collectivity and anonymity, underlining that the embrace is an act that unites all, regardless of their identity. "The Embrace" has become an iconic symbol of Spain's transition to democracy. It represents the desire for reconciliation and unity of a country seeking to leave behind the divisions of the past.*
