Encuentro Internacional de Arte de Medellín, MDE

Medellín international art fair (MDE) is a quadrennial art event distinguished chiefly by its close links with the art scene in the city of Medellín. The MDE acknowledges artistic practices to be a tool for strengthening the social fabric, citizens’ participation and the appropriation of public space; it proposes a platform for creation and boosting visibility which combines exhibition spaces and educational sessions and promotes exchange between local and foreign artists and communities of Medellín.

Three Spanish artists are taking part in this year’s event – Jordi Colomer, Emilia de Azcárate and Nuria Güell, who have been selected to form part of the conventional exhibition core of MDE15, and enjoy the support of the AC/E Mobility programme. The conventional core brings together the works designed by artists to be shown in exhibition rooms and at the Museo de Antioquia, the Casa del Encuentro and the Casa de la Música. It also includes interventions by artists and art groups in various independent art spaces in the city.

MDE15 aims to create a moment of reflection and commitment to Medellín’s recent transformation since the advent of the new millennium, from a local and global perspective; the theme of the fair, Local Histories/Global Practices, points to this purpose. Although the changes and transformation the city has undergone are real and tangible, the dynamics of the processes that underpin them are particularly complex from an ethical point of view.
