This is the 14th annual Encuentros/Encounters at UCR, events that bring together scholars and performers to explore some aspect of the Ibero-American musical heritage. A day-long conference devoted to the musical heritage of the city and province of Valencia, followed in the evening by a piano recital of music by Valencian composers and music related to Valencia. The recital will be given by renowned Spanish pianist Ana Benavides and feature works by Spanish composers Albéniz, Granados, Rodrigo, and Colomer, among others.
The Center for Iberian and Latin American Music at the University of California, Riverside, has organized annual Encuentros/Encounters since 2005.
These conferences and concerts are devoted to particular aspects of the Ibero-American musical heritage, including Spain, Latin America, the Philippines, and California. Previous Encounters have focused on the Mexican son, Peruvian music and politics, race and music in colonial Brazil, Goya and Granados, music of colonial Philippines, flamenco, Argentine tango, and music under the Franco dictatorship, among others.
