Edinburgh International Book Festival 2019

The Edinburgh International Book Festival began in 1983 and is now a key event in the August Festival season. The Festival programmes over 900 events, which are enjoyed by people of all ages. Each year writers from all over the world gather to become part of this unique forum in which audience and author meet to exchange thoughts and opinions on some of the world's most pressing issues.

The Festival has developed an excellent reputation for its international programme, bringing to Scotland a range of world class authors and discovering new international voices. 

AC/E is once again supporting the attendance of Spanish writers Fernando Aramburu​, Javier Cercas, Agustín Fernández Mallo and Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

Fernando Aramburu & David Keenan
Fernando will be discussing his novel, "Homeland", which was published in May 2019. Homeland is an epic and heartbreaking story of two best friends whose families are divided by conflicting loyalties. It is a gripping story exploring the meaning of family, friendship and living under the shadow of terrorism. He will be in conversation with David Keenan, Scottish author, critic and musician. David will be discussing his book For the Good Times, set in Belfast in the 1970s, an era of military terror and sectarian violence. The discussion between the two authors is bound to be a fascinating one.

Javier Cercas
Javier Cercas will be discussing his recent novel "The Lord of the Dead", which was published in April this year. "Lord of All the Dead" is a courageous journey into Javier Cercas' family history and that of a country collapsing from a fratricidal war. The author revisits Ibahernando, his parents' village in southern Spain, to research the life of Manuel Mena. This ancestor, dearly loved by Cercas' mother, died in combat at the age of nineteen during the battle of the Ebro, the bloodiest episode in Spain's history.

Hassan Blasim & Agustín Fernández Mallo
Agustín Fernández Mallo will be discussing his latest book, "Nocilla Lab", which was published in January 2019. Juxtaposing fiction with non-fiction, "Nocilla Lab" is a daring literary experiment in multiple forms, including internal monologues, sketches, post-poetry and comics. The book touches upon themes of memory, travel, and literature. Agustín will be in conversation with Hassan Blasim, an exiled Iraqi writer living in Finland, who will be discussing his forthcoming collection of short stories, "God 99".

Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara
For this event, which is aimed at children aged 4-7 years old, Maria Isabel Sanchez-Vegara will be speaking about her work on the bestselling series, "Little People, Big Dreams". This series of charming illustrated books tells the stories of inspiring people and tells how they were able to achieve their childhood dreams. The books from the series this year look at the inspiring lives of Ada Lovelace, Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst, Ella Fitzgerald. The event promises to be engaging and interactive and great fun for the children involved, involving dressing up and creative play.
