DocsBarcelona Valparaíso is the result of the successful work carried out for more than four years by 500 Nanómetros (NM) and DocsBarcelona in Chile. DocsBarcelona Valparaíso is based on the same model as the Barcelona festival and aims to become the Southern Cone’s platform for internationalising the Spanish and Latin American audiovisual sector. Valparáiso, which hosts the event, is a cultural capital and university city. The festival is managed by 500 NM, which has organised the well-known SurDocs festival for 12 years.
This first edition intends to set up a new laboratory for interactive documentaries and a laboratory for developing projects, as well as featuring performances for schoolchildren and an international competition. The festival will take place at four venues in the city of Valparaíso under the direction of Joan González, who is also director of DocsBarcelona.
AC/E is supporting the interactive documentary and project development laboratories at this first edition. The DocsBarcelona Valparaíso festival intends to become a platform for the promotion, internationalisation and exchange of documentary films by implementing the Spanish model of DocsBarcelona in Chile. The laboratory of interactive documentaries being organised for the first time in Chile this year features lectures, the creation of interactive prototypes and exhibitions. Chilean directors, producers, designers and communicators will take part under the guidance of Arnau Gifreu, coordinator of InterDocs at DocsBarcelona, and Berto Yáñez, programmer of A Navalla Suiza, two Spanish creators devoted to developing new formats of this kind. By showing and disseminating their work and experiences, the Chilean participants will be able to explore and discover the potential of this new film language. Both Arnau Gifreu and Berto Yáñez will give lectures open to everyone to talk about the progress Spain is making in this area and the development of their projects.
The project development laboratory is run by Joan González, director of DocsBarcelona and DocsBarcelona Valparaíso and Medellín, who will guide Chilean projects in order to improve their pitchings, development and international sales. These opportunities for exchange and strategies are greatly called for by the Chilean audiovisual sector. Joan González will also present some of his work as a producer at special sessions of the festival for audiences of schoolchildren, based on the model of the Docs & Teens section of DocsBarcelona, as well as giving a lecture to promote the projects DocsBarcelona is running in Chile.
