The exhibition "Dear Martín" at the Niemeyer Center in Avilés is one of the exhibition highlights of Martín Chirino's centenary. It is a newly created project supported by AC/E, curated by Alfonso de la Torre, and is on display between May and September, focusing on the years Martín Chirino spent in the United States.
The exhibition presents sculptures with an American influence, pieces related to those that the sculptor discovered his rhythm with at MoMA in 1960, those he presented at the Grace Borgenicht gallery, also in New York, as well as the gestation of some of his series during his residency that he would later develop and continue upon his return to Spain. The exhibition is complemented by an extensive documentary collection including correspondence, photographs, and film footage from those years.
The project is supported by the Martín Chirino Art and Thought Foundation, which commemorates in 2025 the centenary of the birth of sculptor Martín Chirino (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, March 1, 1925 - Madrid, March 11, 2019) with a dozen exhibition projects scheduled in art centers, museums, cultural institutions, and art galleries, as well as seminars, conferences, workshops, and publications, among other events and actions, centered around the life and work of the artist from Gran Canaria.
