This seminar, directed by Spanish critic and curator Martí Manen, is organised by the Spanish cultural centre in Buenos Aires (CCEBA) and the art department of Torcuato Di Tella University, with the collaboration of AC/E through the PICE grants.
To quote Martí Manen, ‘curating exhibitions reflects contextual situations. Or that is how it should be. The exhibition, as an element of contact, calls for recognition of what is happening in a place in order to be effective. Not only the economic situation determines what type of exhibition, but also the political context, relations between generations, individual freedom… Curating exhibitions entails creating moments where ways of talking, ways of doing things are defined.’ The talk will deal with a few examples from the end of the 1990s in Spain, as well as from the present.
MARTÍ MANEN (Barcelona, 1976) is a curator and art critic. He has curated exhibitions at the Museo de Historia Natural (Mexico DF), Sala Montcada - Obra Social "La Caixa" (Barcelona), AARA (Bangkok), Sala Rekalde (Bilbao), Konsthall C (Stockholm), La Panera (Lleida) and CA2M (Madrid). For five years he curated exhibitions in his own bedroom (Sala Hab, Barcelona). He has recently published two books: Salir de la exposición (si es que alguna vez habíamos entrado), a book on the theory of exhibition processes published by Consonni, and Contarlo todo sin saber cómo, a novel that is an exhibition that is a novel, published by CA2M. He is currently co-curating the exhibition programme El texto: principios y salidas at the Centro de Arte Fabra i Coats in Barcelona, and is preparing a project about processes of artistic creation and their presentation for the Fundació Miró (Barcelona) and Bonniers Konsthall (Stockholm).
