Cultural Exchange with International Performing Arts Programmers at the CDN

The Centro Dramático Nacional (CDN) is a publicly run centre for theatrical productions. It is attached to the national institute for the performing arts and music – Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (INAEM) – which directly manages cultural projects related to the theatre, dance, music and circus. Since being established by the INAEM in 1978, the CDN’s chief concern has been to disseminate and consolidate currents and trends in contemporary playwriting, paying special attention to today’s Spanish authors; collaboration with other national and international institutions, both public and private; and a policy of international cultural cooperation aimed at promoting and spreading Spanish culture beyond its borders.

With a view to encouraging cultural exchange with Russia, Viktor Ryzhakov, artistic director of the  Meyerhold Centre, has been invited to make a selection of Spanish directors and promote knowledge of them in Russia by organising workshops and professional meetings.

The visit has also been extended to Anatoly Smeliansky, assistant artistic director of Moscow Art Theatre, in order to put on a production of Benito Pérez Galdós’s novel Doña Perfecta organised jointly by the Centro Dramático Nacional  and Moscow Art Theatre, for which Ernesto Caballero’s adaptation for the stage will be translated into Russian.

AC/E is taking part in the project through the PICE visitor awards by facilitating the presence of both directors in Madrid to develop this project.
