FIGMENT is a forum for the creation and display of participatory and interactive art produced by emerging artists across disciplines. Every year it holds a competition to design and construct an architecture pavilion on Governors Island (NY), the City of Dreams Pavilion. The competition, now in its fifth year, results in a pavilion that functions between June and September as a meeting place where visitors can find out about the island’s cultural programmes and enjoy readings, performances and interactive experiences with art and the historical context of Governors Island.
This year the winning project was submitted by the Spanish studio Izaskun CHINCHILLA ARQUITECTOS. The proposal is called Organic Growth and is based on the organic growth of cities while maintaining a balance with their setting. It entails reusing a series of bicycle wheels, tripods and umbrellas to create an ‘organic growth’ structure that is extended to provide a covering for outdoor activities.
The project is supported by AC/E’s Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture.
