La Biennale de Montréal 2016

La Biennale de Montréal 2016

BNLMTL 2016 is the 9th edition of La Biennale de Montréal, Canada's most significant international contemporary art event. Curated by Philippe Pirotte, it features new and recent works by over 50 local, national and international artists across a number of Montréal institutions and in public space. This citywide project also includes a dynamic programme of concerts, talks, performances, screenings and publications.

The title "Le Grand Balcon" is drawn from Jean Genet’s canonical play "Le Balcon" where the political conflict between revolution and counterrevolution echoes the philosophical opposition of reality and illusion. "Le Grand Balcon" configures an unruly and recalcitrant space that calls for a materialist and sensualist approach. It invites us to rethink both the (im)possibility and the urgency of hedonism. What is the status of the pursuit of sensual pleasure? Can we develop a hedonistic politics?

AC/E collaborates with the Professionals Welcome Program of the Biennale, supporting the participation of the key Spanish arts professional Eva Gonzalez-Sancho to visit Montréal during the Opening Days of La Biennale in order to define collaboration frameworks and modalities of exchange from co-production, co-commissioning, dissemination, professional development and more between different institutions for future editions of the Biennale. The aim of this project is to develop an agreement for projects to be presented in 2017 and 2018 featuring the work and ideas of Spanish and Canadian artists and cultural workers.
