Be festival 2016

BE FESTIVAL 2016 will take place from 21 to 25 June at Birmingham Repertory. This year BE will host the annual EUNIC meeting with at least 14 Cultural Attaches. Each night 4 half hour performances from 4 different companies will be served up around a communal dinner, getting artists, programmers, critics and audience together. The variety within a single night at the event is what makes it accessible and appealing. This also provides us room to programme bold and risk-taking work.

AC/E supports the participation of:
Los Bárbaros with their show “Things we would love to see on stage”
Cris Blanco with her show “Agitador Vortex”
And Xavi Bobés with his show “Things Easily Forgotten”
Also the jurors: the choreographer Tomeo Vergés and the artistic director of TNT Pep Pla, as well as the workshop leader in Alexander Technique Fuensanta Zambrana.

-"Things we would love to see on stage" by Los Bárbaros. The clue is in the title. An eloquent and witty theatre piece where the stage becomes a playground for the ‘barbarians’, fighting to live in the border, madly in love with theatre and life. The show runs through a list of desires - a five minute hug, a camping tent lit with a candle -whilst a metronome ticks, conveying the beat of life passing by. A heartwarming piece with a sense of irony that chimes with the positive side of failure. Los Bárbaros was set up in Madrid by Miguel Rojo and is a collaborative hub for artists from all disciplines.

-“Agitador Vortex” by Cris Blanco. A mix gender B movie depiction about a director wanting to make her once-in-a-lifetime movie from the confines of her home. Using cameras, screens, gadgets and everything but the kitchen sink, the show uses the cliche of classic American films, the majesty of soundtracks and the intimacy of theatre to create a cross border experience where genders are playfully swapped. A fearless approach to cinema but categorically impossible to categorise. Created and performed by Barcelona based artist Cris Blanco, who excels in mixing theatrical genres with a penchant for Sci-Fi.

“Things Easily Forgotten” by Xavi Bobés. Picture the setting. A round table in an intimate and dusty Spanish lounge littered with objects. Xavier Bobés is your guide and medium for an intimate and sensory journey of sights and sounds delving into histories of Spain from the 1940s to the 1970s, invoking old memories and conjuring up new ones. A fascinating reminisce that shines a light on the here and now. The show was a great success at this year’s London International Mime Festival. Bobés is a Catalan actor and scenic manipulator who has used objects for 12 years to draw out new symbols and contexts. Just for five people per show.

12 performances in total: Wed, Thu, Fri & Sat |
3pm, 4.30pm & 6pm at a secret location

- Tomeo Vergés is coming as a jury pannelist and workshop leader. The choreographer and director of Cia. Man Drake. Based in France since 1980, he has worked with many choreographers including Maguy Marin, Caterina Sagna, Régine Chopinot and François Verret. In 1992 he established his own company and has toured around the world. Tomeo’s work combines theatre and dance but always has the body as a point of departure. Vergés has taught and delivered workshops internationally.

-Pep Pla is going to take part as a juror. Pep has been the Director of the Catalonia based CAET (Centre d'Arts Escèniques de Terrassa) and the Artistic Director of the festival TNT (Terrassa Noves Tendències). As a performer he has worked in numerous theatrical shows with directors like Maurizio Scaparro, Mario Gas, Sergi Belbel and Calixto Bieito as well as performing on TV shows. He has directed shows for theatres like Teatre Lliure and Teatre Nacional de Catalunya in Barcelona.

- Fuensanta Zambrana will give an Alexander Technique workshop where the nature of performing will be explored in ways that are not necessarily `framed´ theatrically, but are part of daily living.
