Barokkfest Early Music Festival 2020

Barokkfest Early Music Festival 2020

Barokkfest Early Music Festival is one of the largest festivals for baroque music in Northern Europe. The festival is held every year in the last week of January and sports some forty events in the historical city of Trondheim. The festival also organizes concerts during the year, attracting a total audience of more than 10.000 listeners. Barokkfest collaborates with promoters nationally and will bring this production to Tromsø and the Nortern Lights festival, a key festival in Northern Norway.

This edition of the festival focuses on the general theme of war in history and culture. The programme proposed by the flourishing Spanish group Musica Ficta fits particularly well with this general theme. The group has already gained significant reputation for their interpretation of works by Spanish renaissance composer Victoria. At the Barokkfest festival Musica Ficta will perform his stunning Requiem (Officium Defunctorum), focusing on the theme of death and suffering.

AC/E supports the participation of Spanish group Musica Ficta led by conductor Raúl Mallavibarrena in order to perform a key work of the Spanish repertoire, the Officium Defunctorum, in the stunning medieval Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, the world's northernmost gothic cathedral, and at the cathedral of Tromsø.
Officium Defunctorum is one of the most celebrated works of Victoria and indeed a particularly emblematic piece of the repertoire of the Spanish Renaissnace. Barokkfest is particularly proud to present Musica Ficta in this production. The group has already gained significant international reputation for its performance of this repertoire and the festival is delighted to present the group and this work of Spanish cultural heritage in Norway, thus enlarging the group's international impact.
