2016 is the centenary of the death of Rubén Darío (Metapa 1867 – León 1916), the pseudonym of the great Nicaraguan poet Feliz Rubén García Sarmiento. For this purpose MonArt is presenting AZUL…at the monastery of Santo Tomás in Ávila, a project that combines music, poetry and painting.
Azul is the title of the book of poems published by Ruben Darío in 1888 which marked the espousal of the modern movement in poetry. Praised by Juan Valera, Ruben Darío was the initiator and foremost practitioner of Spanish-American Modernism. Named after the book, this event will bring together a few Spanish poets such as José Lupiañez, Fernando de Villena, Jose Mª Muñoz Quirós and Ester Bueno, in whose oeuvre the influence of Modernism lingers on.
As part of the same project, nine contemporary artists will produce works at Azul to create an exhibition in the Claustro del Silencio.
With the support of AC/E, Fátima Miranda will offer a ‘Concert-Performance for voice only’ combining oriental, western and her own vocal techniques – a deeply moving show with a very significant and refined poetic, gestural, visual, dramatic and humorous component.
