Ibon Landa Amutxategi (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1994) is the artist selected to develop this residency at the WIELS Contemporary Art Center (Brussels), with the collaboration of Acción Cultural Española and the Ministry of Culture of the Embassy of Spain in Belgium, among July and December 2023. The purpose of this call is to facilitate the creation of collaboration networks, to promote the mobility of Spanish creators, to encourage artistic production through the offer of residences for artists and the provision of work spaces, as well as how to strengthen links with international cultural institutions.
Ibon lives and works in Bilbao. His practice is based on the interest of bringing materials closer to works that vibrate. For this he works the weight of the image in space through materiality. To do this, he uses manual processes with various materials in which images printed on paper abound. His work implies a material approach to the image that assumes the residual as a starting point for the work to focus on marking or signifying the image, almost in the sense of scarigraphy, of the groove in the material. The manipulation of the printed paper as verification that the image has been traced to reveal its materiality, places him as an artist who seeks to capture works between the trace as a gesture and the image as the desired form.
