Apertura (meaning ‘opening’) is the biggest urban event in the Madrid art world. For three days nearly 50 galleries simultaneously host 43 exhibitions featuring more than 60 artists, with a packed programme and special opening hours, taking to the streets of Madrid. This hive of activity also involves leading institutions and collectors. Madrid’s open gallery weekend is a showcase for contemporary art in the country and anyone can visit the galleries free of charge.
