Alkantara Festival 2016

With a history of more than 20 years, Alkantara Festival (AF) is a markedly contemporary, international and transdisciplinary festival rooted in the urban culture of Lisbon. AF has brought, over the years to the main theatres of Portugal, intensive cultural programs, creating a dynamic audience circulation. AF aims to give a solid contribution to artistic creation, by supporting the work of Portuguese and international artists, based on it’s vast networking environment and artistic knowledge.

AF 16 focuses on the inversion of basic concepts of progressive and conservative; on how “to progress” is concentrated, in our political and cultural context, on preserving and reinforcing basic liberties. Its artists fall back on forms related to tradition to affirm the contemporary: top choreographers from Africa, Japan and the magreb dig into their respective dance traditions, Galicia retells its stories, and Chekhov’s repertoire is revisited by artists from Brasil and Europe.
