Adelaide Guitar Festival (AGF) is the most significant event of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Held biennially, AGF is a global music celebration of the world’s most popular instrument in myriad forms, unbound by genre or format. AGF brings together world-leading players with the best of emerging talent, instrument makers and academics, and presents a range of main-stage concerts, club gigs, films, talks, masterclasses, workshops and a high-level international classical guitar competition.
AC/E supports the presentation of Ricardo Gallén to perform world premiere with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, of a new work for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra by Leo Brouwer: and and of Francisco Bernier, Artistic Director of Seville Guitar Festival at Adelaide Guitar Festival.
Adelaide Guitar Festival has commissioned iconic Cuban composer (now based in Spain) Leo Brouwer to write a new piece for guitar and chamber orchestra, to be premiered in the Guitar Festival Symphony Gala with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as a centerpiece of the festival’s 2016 program. Maestro Brouwer’s specific request was that Spanish guitarist Ricardo Gallén be the soloist to premiere the piece. Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is one of Australia’s leading orchestras, and Ricardo Gallén will perform this significant premiere with them on 13th August 2016 at the Adelaide Town Hall. Additionally, Mr Gallén will perform a solo recital in the Adelaide Guitar Festival’s opening concert on 11 August 2016, give a masterclass to three outstanding Australian guitar students, and will be on the judging panel for the prestigious Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition.
In 2013, Adelaide Guitar Festival Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan visited the Seville Guitar Festival, where young, dynamic director Francisco Bernier has developed a distinguished boutique event that explores cross-artform experiences. The relationship between the two festivals has developed further through Adelaide’s successful submission to be designated a City of Music by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). Seville was the first City of Music designated by UNESCO, and Francisco Bernier is one of the first artists from within the UCCN that will be invited to Adelaide as part of Adelaide’s new UCCN programs. There is a long-term vision for collaboration and support between the two festivals, including reciprocal performance opportunities and information sharing through the respective Classical Guitar Competitions.
Francisco Bernier’s participation in the Adelaide Guitar Festival in 2016 will comprise:
1) A solo recital on the afternoon of Saturday 13th August in the Dunstan Playhouse at Adelaide Festival Centre. The program will feature exquisite Spanish repertoire of the last couple of centuries, including works by Fernando Sor, Joaquín Turina, Anton García Abril and Francesco Tarrega, and will incorporate tastings of Andalusian food and sherry following the performance.
2) A masterclass on Thursday 11 August for three young Australian guitarists
3) Adjudication of the prestigious Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition Final on Sunday 14 August.
