El incierto señor Cunqueiro (The Uncertain Mr Cunqueiro) offers an in-depth approach of the works of writer Álvaro Cunqueiro in both the Galician and Castilian languages, along with his narrative, dramatic, poetic, journalistic and gastronomic output. Antón Reixa is the director of this 60-minute documentary which aims to discover, twenty years after the death of one of the most important Galician language writers of all time, why Cunqueiro has received such inadequate recognition in Galicia, and why he is still ignored by Spanish literature.
The documentary brings together archive images in which Álvaro Cunqueiro himself speaks of his literary motifs, friends, tastes... Accounts which go hand-in-hand with those offered by more than a dozen relatives, writers, critics, friends and specialists, including Xuan Bello, Quico Cadaval, Xavier Castro, César Cunqueiro, Juan Ramón Díaz, Luis Mateo Díez, Francisco Fernández del Riego, José María Merino, César Antonio Molina, César Morán, Sacha Ormaechea and Nélida Piñón.
The documentary is rounded off with a recording of a rehearsal of one of Cunqueiro's most important dramatic works, Don Hamlet, which reflects many of the distinctive features of his output, such as his taste for the classics, the re-reading of myths, his obsession with language, etc.
