The Folkestone Triennial marks its second edition in the summer of 2011, following the excellent response from critics and the public in 2008. The Triennial is made up exclusively of works expressly commissioned for the event and created in situ by acclaimed artists from a number of countries. The theme of the second edition will be borders, and will bring together 19 artists. As in the previous edition, some of their works will be maintained as permanent sculptures on the Triennial site.
Cristina Iglesias (born San Sebastian, 1956) is the first Spanish artist invited to take part in this international event. Her project will be located alongside one of the Martello towers, historic constructions built as watchtowers along the English coast to warn of possible French attacks, looking out onto the English Channel. Iglesias will erect a structure on top of the ruins of the building so visitors can explore the remains of the tower, along with the original vegetation and the new vegetation incorporated as part of the intervention.
