The exhibition Centenary of Xavier Montsalvatge. 1912-2012 is one of the activities arranged by the Associació Xavier Montsalvatge Compositor to mark the celebration on 11 March 2012 of the centenary of the birth of one of the key figures in Catalan music of the second half of the 20th century. The date marks an opportunity to showcase the extensive and varied musical output of a figure who played a decisive role in national culture. The exhibition is sponsored by the Department of Culture of the Catalan Regional Government, and organised by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).
Following its time in Barcelona the show, which is curated by Jorge de Persia and Jesús Alvira, will be presented at the Museu d’Història in Girona, the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and the Julliard School of Music in New York.
The exhibition places Xavier Montsalvatge's music and aesthetics within the context of the history of art in the second half of the 20th century. In addition to biographical aspects it also features documents connected with the composer: artistic works dedicated to Xavier Montsalvatge or collected by him, photographs, manuscripts, letters and articles.
