5th Croatian Biennial of Illustration 2014

5th Croatian Biennial of Illustration 2014

The Croatian Biennial of Illustration is an international event in the world of illustration that has been held in collaboration with the Croatian section of the IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) since 2006. Since then, every two years it brings together the finest illustrators and artists at an event that revolves around talks and exhibitions of originals by famous artists from all over the world. It thus promotes cooperation between artists and publishers.

The fourth Biennial underlined the Croatian community’s need to demand a rightful place for illustration as one of the most active and influential arts, and the fifth Biennial will therefore be focusing on promoting and contextualising the Croatian illustration sector in today’s world. For this purpose the Biennial is featuring some of the most important illustrators of Australia, Europe and South America. The selection includes two Spaniards who are among the most active on the Spanish illustration scene: Tàssies and Zabala, whose presence is supported by AC/E through the PICE mobility grants.

Josep Antonio Tàssies is an IBBY finalist, winner of the International Illustration Award of the Fundación Santa María and so far the only Spaniard to win the Grand Prix at the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava 2009 (BIB), which is sponsored by Unesco and among the most prestigious international competitions in this field. Javier Zabala holds the national prize for Illustration and is a runner-up for the IBBY’s Hans Christian Andersen Illustration awards.
