The Secretary of State for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, through the Directorate for Cultural and Scientific Relations of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), is once again strengthening its presence at the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte, the Venice Biennale.
The tradition Venetian event, which this year – its 55th– is entitled Il Palazzo Enciclopedico/The Encyclopaedic Palace, continues to be one of the most important international events in the contemporary art world.
Spain has always played a leading role in the history of this biennale and has an exhibition space of its own in the Venetian Giardini.
The appointment by the Directorate for Cultural and Scientific Relations of Octavio Zaya as curator of the Spanish Pavilion at Venice stems from the proposal of an advisory committee formed for this purpose and made up of José Guirao (director of the Casa Encendida), Teresa Velázquez (head of exhibitions at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía), Alberto Ruiz de Samaniego (curator of the Spanish pavilion at the 2007 Venice Art Biennale) and Estrella de Diego (independent curator).
For this year’s event Octavio Zaya has chosen the artist Lara Almarcegui (Zaragoza, 1972). It is known that her project will be site specific and will encompass both the Spanish pavilion and the whole city.
