32 Festival de Almada 2015

32 Festival de Almada 2015

Almada festival is hailed as one of the most prestigious in Portugal and this year’s edition, the 32nd, is entitled O Novíssimo Teatro Espanhol and dedicated to the latest Spanish theatre. Two of its activities enjoy the support of AC/E through its Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture: theatre performances and staged readings.

Early twenty-first-century Spanish drama is showing clear signs of a breakaway from that of the Transition (Sanchis Sinisterra, Fermín Cabal, Ignacio Amestoy, among others). The past fifteen years have been characterised by a change in stage projects and the number and type of themes they explore. These new plays have in common their formal construction and focus on plots dealing with current problems such as violence, terrorism, politics and immigration, which are some of the modern-day themes that have inspired the new Spanish theatre.

This activity is part of the project entitled Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Playwrightswhich is designed to foster the internationalisation of Spanish playwrights so that their works are performed on international stages. For this purpose a committee of experts was selected to choose the works to be shown at this 32nd edition of Alamada Festival:
