Since 2006, as part of its yearly activities, the Asociación Cultural de Artes Musicales Romanza has been scheduling a programme focusing on the dissemination and permanent presence of operetta in Peru – especially Lima, where there are many enthusiasts of this genre. Ten zarzuelas have been staged to date – Doña Francisquita, Luisa Fernanda, Los Gavilanes, La Verbena de la Paloma, La Revoltosa, El Barberillo de Lavapiés, La Dolorosa, Las Bravías, La Chavala and La Leyenda del Beso – as well as the Spanish opera Marina, two anthologies of the works of composers Chapí and Chueca, and four zarzuela-based anthologies.
With this track record, Romanza has scheduled a new thematic anthology of zarzuela for the spring of 2014 which explores zarzuela’s lyrical ties to opera, chiefly Spanish and Italian. The programme currently being put together features romances, duos, chorales and concertantes from La Dolores, Gato Montés, Marina, Vida Breve and Don Gil de Alcalá on the one hand, and, on the other, from Black el Payaso, Dúo de la Africana, Barbero de Sevilla and Adiós a la Bohemia, among others.
AC/E is collaborating through its mobility programme by supporting the presence of three distinguished Spanish artists: the sopranos Milagros Martín and Svetla Krásteva and the baritone Luis Cansino.
