Every year Berlin International Literature Festival (9 – 19 September 2015), organised by Peter-Weiss Stiftung S.A. and Berliner Festspiele with the support of the German Unesco committee, brings a large audience the latest trends in contemporary prose and poetry. It is a meeting place where hundreds of authors not only share their texts with the audience but also give their opinions on the current political or cultural issues of their countries of origin at symposia organised for this purpose. The festival, which is visited by 25,000 people, organises more than 180 events featuring 150 authors from all over the world, from the most highly acclaimed to talented young writers whose works have not yet been translated into other languages.
The festival consists of the following sections: Literatures of the world, Kaleidoscope, International children’s and young adult literature, Reflections, Speak memory and Scritture Giovanni, the latter being part of a cooperation project between four major European literature festivals: Festivaletteratura (Italy), Hay Festival of Literature and Ideas (Wales), the Björnsonfestival of Molde (Norway) and the ILB (Internationales Literaturfestival, Berlin).
Javier Marías, in addition to taking part in the talk So fängt das schlimme an with Paul Ingendaay and Christian Brücker, is the writer in charge of opening the 2015 festival.
