RESULTS 2015sElECtion of projECts134/Yermaat the GALA hispanic Theater e GALA Hispanic  eater in Washington DC celebrated in 2015its 40th anniversary with the world premiere of a new adaptation of Yerma, the tragic poem written in 1934 bythe renowned Spanish poet and writer Federico García Lorca.  e text was adapted by the Spanish author Fernando J. López, the production directed by José Luis Arellano and the original music composed by another Spaniard, David R. Peralto.  e main role was played by the well-known Spanish actress Mabel del Pozo. It received 9 nominations for the 2016 Helen Hayes Awards.For this new adaptation in Spanish with English subtitles, Fernando J López reduced the cast to  ve characters: Yerma, Juan, Víctor, La Vieja Dolores and María. Limiting the number of characters intensi es the oppressionof a loveless marriage, the forbidden desires and the repressive society faced by Yerma in her rural environment.  is version also underlines the modern woman’s concern with motherhoodand her role in society.
